What Does the Spoornet-Transnet Bursary Program Offer?
Fields available and bursaries awarded will depend on the need within the company as all successful candidates are seen as potential employees. Yet, employment will depend on the vacancies available at the time that each candidate completes their studies.
Fields of study that could be considered:
- Transport Economics
- Computer Science
- Industrial Relations / Psychology
- All fields of Engineering
- Public Health
- Information Technology
Other fields may also be available, this will depend on the company and candidates can apply for fields each year that is advertised. Available fields will be listed on the Transnet Website.
Costs Covered by Bursary
Candidates who are awarded bursaries will be required to sign a compulsory agreement stipulating that they will work one year for the company for every year of study. This term will commence upon the completion of their study term.
The bursary will cover the following for each candidate:
- All tuition fees
- All prescribed books
- Accommodation fees
- Meal fees
All applicants must be South African citizens in order to apply. There will be as regulations that will also have to be met to be eligible for a bursary, these will be set out by the company.
Candidates must also adhere to the basic requirements as follow:
- Applicants must have a valid ID document
- Applicants must have a valid Matric / Grade 12 certification
- Applicants must be registered or meet all requirements of the Institute of Higher Learning to study there
Bursaries are renewable yearly and the continuation of funding for study will depend on each candidates academic results each year.
How to Apply for This Bursary
If you are interested in applying for a bursary provided by Spoornet you can download the Application Form complete it and send it to or hand delivered to, Transnet Bursary Department, Room 4206, Carlton Centre, 150 Commissioner Street, Johannesburg.
Applicants must ensure all documentation is certified and accompanies their application. Applications with missing documentation or that are not completed in full will not be taken into consideration. Please ensure your contact detail is correct and up to date.
Once applications close the screening process will commence. Candidates will be selected on their academic performances and invited to partake in an interview. The interviews will be held at their offices in Durban, Bloemfontein, Johannesburg and Cape Town. Once the interviews have been concluded the final selection process will take place. Shortlisted candidates may also be asked to participate in a medical fitness examination.
Candidates who are successful will be contacted by the company. If you do not hear from them, please accept your application as being unsuccessful.

Applications for bursaries from Spoornet may be made from the 1st of May to 31st July each year.
