Ekurhuleni Bursary Program 2016-2017

The city of Ekurhuleni municipality strongly believes in the skills development plan as set out by Government. They offer talented candidates the opportunity to study further after they have passed matric with their bursary program.

The name, Ekurhuleni, is special as its meaning is ‘Place of Peace’ in the Tsonga language. It is one of 3 municipalities located within Gauteng Province and the OR Tambo Airport is also within its borders. They invite talented candidates of all backgrounds to apply for their bursaries once applications open yearly.

What Does the Ekurhuleni Bursary Program Offer?

Candidates interested in applying for a bursary with this department has a wide variety of study field options. However, most fields are only made available in accordance to the need within that field.

Costs Covered by Bursary

Most of the bursary programs offered by Ekurhuleni will provide the following costs for successful candidates unless otherwise stipulated by the department.

Candidates will be covered for the following:

  • University Registration
  • University Tuition Fees
  • University Book Fees
  • University Examination Fees
  • University Accommodation Fees
  • University Meal Fees
  • Monthly Allowance as set by each bursary


To be eligible candidates must adhere to the regulations as specified by each bursary. There are some requirements that each bursary program will need however.

Candidates must have the following:

  • Must be a South African citizen
  • Must hold a valid ID document
  • Must have a valid Matric / Grade 12 certificate
  • Must be fluent in English
  • Must not have a criminal record

In some cases a driver’s license, other languages or skills may also be required.

How to Apply for This Bursary

Please include all documentation as stipulated on the application form. Always remember to have your documentation copied and verified before submitting. Candidates can download the application for the Ekurhuleni Website or collect one at any of their customer care centers, clinic, libraries or venues as made available.

Any applications not fully completed and signed, missing documentation or that are late, will not be considered. Candidates who make the short list will be contacted by the department, thus, if you do not hear from them within a three month period after the closing date, please accept your application as being unsuccessful.

Timeframe That Bursary is Open

There are currently no deadlines for applications as the available bursaries are made available at different stages throughout the year and each has its own closing date. Candidates can see via the link provided above whether they have any open bursaries, if not, you can also check on regular intervals.
