What Does the Department of Transport Traffic Officer Learnership Program Offer?
Candidates applying for these learnerships will have quite a bit of learning to do. During their learnership period candidates will receive training on the following fields:
- Public Communication
- People and Legislation
- Traffic Hazards and Legislation
- Load Compliance
- Vehicle Compliance and Legislation
- Traffic and Legislation
- Orientation – Personal
Costs Covered by Learnership
This learnership is usually for an 18 month duration. During this time selected applicants will receive a monthly stipend, but transport and housing will be their own responsibility. Candidates will receive practical and theoretical training during this period. Upon completion of their learnership they may also receive a certificate stating the achievement of their training.
Candidates must be a citizen of South Africa and hold a valid ID document, as well as a valid driver’s license for Code 8.
The following requirements must also be met by applicants:
- Hold a valid Grade 12 / Matric certification
- Be skilled in English and another language
- Must be computer literate
- Must not have a criminal record
- Must be medically fit (will be required to do a medical examination)
- Willing to work shifts, weekends and holidays

All selected candidates must complete their training and studies as given and must be present for all classes.

Timeframe That Learnership is Open
Learnership applications for traffic officers usually open the middle of each year and will close the end of October yearly, unless otherwise advertised. The Department does not guarantee any of the selected applicants a permanent position after successful completion of their learnership, as this will depend on the need of each division at the time.
